What is corruption? Anything other than a 100% effort to win? If that's the definition then I think the percentage is high, between 1/3 and 1/2. However, is all of that corruption? The heavy favorite who trained poorly that week, and he finishes 6th or back? Some will say the trainer should have scratched the horse. The horse that drew a bad post, in a tough field, and if he finishes 4th or back he gets money off his card and can drop in class next out? Some will say that's "stiffing" the horse. Is that the same as Steve Kerr sitting Curry, Butler, Kuminga, and Green, at the end of the season because they already made the playoffs and he wants to rest them? Short of a driver gambling and the egregious aspect there, the trainer/driver lack of effort for class relief, or some nefarious activity, a lot of what goes on is inherently part of the business, and by default, part of the sport.
He means any trainer who uses things other than hay and oats.
I know exactly what he means but when I think of corrupt, I'm thinking more of what happens during the race itself, he's not.
And I dont think the sport today is nearly as corrupt as some imagine. I know multiple trainers and drivers that had to stop betting because they were losing their shirts. That would never happen with widespread corruption....
They lose their shirt because they almost always think their horse can win and say it trained well during the week.
I agree. As far as trainers gambling, that is nothing new, LOL. Being in this business my entire adult life, I know plenty of trainers. I can count on one hand those that are up on gambling. Most are broke-----or at least not financially successful, secure, etc.-----both from the business side and gambling. Drivers, different story, LOL.
70% of harness racing is crooked. See on fines and suspensions Chris carrubba jr got nailed with needles, syringes and drug medication in barns. Guess his dad, uncle and aunt all taught him well. They were all horse drug using morons in their time. Chris petrelli got nailed again with a positive, what a shocker. He’s like trainer Sam smith, weighs 450 lbs and has to do something to keep the horses going, those 2 fat fucks can’t even bend over to ties their shoes !
