As I posted after NA Cup eliminations, he is off behind. Is that the reason he has been getting beat? Who knows? Some can go with soreness, some can't. Also, sometimes a horse never gets any faster from 2 years old to 3 while others do.

Standardbred horses typically stop growing in height between ages 4 and 5, but they continue to "fill out," gaining muscle mass, width, and weight, until they are 6 to 8 years old. While their legs achieve skeletal maturity early, their spinal vertebrae take much longer to fuse and fully develop. The timeline breaks down as follows:Age 2: Reach approximately 98% of their mature height and 96% of their mature weight . Growth plates in the lower legs are closed .Age 4 to 5: Final height is usually reached, although some individuals might continue to add subtle height until age 7.Age 6 to 8: The spine and back growth plates fuse, allowing the horse to fully mature, widen, and develop deep muscle mass, especially along the topline.

In theory, they should get faster because of this.  Is there still gas in the tank for later years or was the tank emptied at 2?  Injury could also be a factor why they don't get faster.

I heard he is not entering the Meadowlands Pace because of a lung infection.

Can you imagine if he was racing sub 149 miles with a lung infection, probably not, right?

The story as you said...

I knew yesterday but I promised I wouldn't say anything until they officially announced.

Hey Mike, In your opinion is it possible he had this infection when he suffered his 1st two defeats?  You would think Doc Moore would have known if he had it back then though

"Yes, an equine lung infection can absolutely be undetectable during the early or subclinical stages. Because horses possess massive respiratory reserves, they often mask symptoms until the disease is advanced. In many cases, mild or stealth infections only become obvious during peak athletic exertion."

-Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine

"Yes, an early-stage lung infection—often falling under the umbrella of Equine Asthma (formerly Inflammatory Airway Disease) or mild pneumonia—will negatively affect a Standardbred's running performance. Even in the early stages, it significantly impairs their racing ability."

Well, that may explain it. He didn't put up much of a fight in those 2 early losses either.  Thx for info on lung infections.

We might never know though if he did or not.

But if it takes some time to develop a equine lung infection to be diagnosed, then the probability is in favor he might of.

Tim, All I know is he scoped clean when he got beat in the NA Cup eliminations. The connections are considering adding Lasix but they haven't made a final decision on that

Do you know or can find out the specific type lung infection?

We might never know though if he did or not.

But if it takes some time to develop a equine lung infection to be diagnosed, then the probability is in favor he might of.

See...

"Equine lung infections can become clinically apparent anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks after exposure, depending on the underlying cause. Because horses are prey animals, they naturally mask breathing issues, meaning a mild infection might progress to a severe stage before visible symptoms actually..."

Also depends on the specific type infection...

"Viral (e.g., Equine Influenza, EHV): Signs typically appear very rapidly, usually within 1 to 3 days of exposure. Watch for a sudden high fever, dry cough, and clear nasal discharge.

Bacterial (e.g., Streptococcus equi / Strangles): The incubation period generally lasts 2 to 10 days. Clinical signs include a harsh cough, thick white/yellow nasal discharge, and swollen lymph nodes.

Pleuropneumonia / "Shipping Fever": This severe transport-related infection can develop in as few as 1 to 3 days, though signs are typically noted within a week. Initial signs may just be a dull attitude and mild fever before breathing becomes painful.

Aspiration Pneumonia: Occurs shortly after inhaling foreign material (like food or water). Symptoms often start within hours to a few days."

Also...

No, a scope (endoscopy) alone cannot 100% determine if a horse has a lung infection. While it is a highly valuable tool, a scope only provides visual information of the upper airway and the main windpipe (trachea). It allows a veterinarian to see structural issues, check for blood, and evaluate the amount and color of mucus. However, the actual lungs are located too deep in the chest for the camera to reach. A perfectly normal-looking trachea does not guarantee the lungs are infection-free, and visual inflammation in the trachea could be caused by allergies, dust, or asthma rather than an infection. To achieve a 100% definitive diagnosis of a lung infection, veterinarians rely on a scope in combination with other diagnostic tools:Tracheal Wash (TW): The vet uses the scope to guide a sterile tube into the airway, flush the area with sterile saline, and collect the fluid. This fluid is sent to a lab for cytology (analyzing cells) and culture to identify the specific bacteria and determine the correct antibiotic.Bronch oalveolar Lavage (BAL): This procedure goes much deeper into the lungs to collect fluid from the deep airways to diagnose issues like equine asthma or lower respiratory infections.Thorac ic Ultrasound: This is crucial for evaluating the surface of the lungs to check for abscesses, pleuropneumonia (fluid in the chest cavity), or consolidation (areas of the lung that are solid due to infection).Thoracic Radiographs (X-Rays): These can be used to look deeper into the lung tissue, although their effectiveness is sometimes limited by the large size of an adult horse.

Like I said, he scoped clean after NA Cup eliminations but Moore probably pulled blood at some point and found an elevated WBC.
