Mike, I've often wondered how certain people get these committees. Does this Assemblywoman have any experience with the horse racing industry? What qualifies her to make or suggest policy initiatives? At least Florida's Rep. was from a horse racing family. It didn't help anyway. But at least he had some knowledge of the sport.

Dougie, you seem to be a reasonable fan of standardbred racing.
What do you think is the most "responsible" and "realistic" way to deal with the thousands of equine athletes retired every year?
As far as I can tell, the options are:
1. Service / entertainment animals  (Amish buggy horses, tourist buggy horses, riding horses)
2. Retirement farms  ($500 per month for life of the horse)
3. Slaughtered for meat  (revenue for owner)
4. Humanely euthanized  (one time cost to owner)
5. Shut down all horse sports completely (Tbreds, Sbreds, Equestrian, Polo)

Even if I technically owned a horse, I'd consider that horse part of my family.

Every animal in my life it was like that.

Animals are not slaves, and horses are animals.

I don't want to fight with you Dougie, or be judgemental.

That's me.

I also never owned / had a horse family member.

When animals know your family they allow you to become part of their pack.

That's a beautiful life.

How about horses get their health assessed.

Then they have options.

See what's best for them on what they like and their abilities.

Or just being a horse and not serving humans at all, and humans serving them.

Is it Glen Chihuahua Cock now?  ngc3

Glen, when I owned horses at Pompano, I remember every friday morning a number of horses were vanned to the Amish. My trainer told me my four (over a three year period) were all going there. Mike P. kind of made me think. How would I know if that was really where they went? I think that points #1 & 2 seem reasonable. Maybe a percentage of handle should go into a fund designated for retired horses. I'm against point 3 & 4. And point #5 is unattainable. I have read, watched, and  listened to Mikes podcast. Seen the pics he posted. Makes me sick. I have to think that there are at least a few decent people in the game who care about the horses. Outside of making money on them.

Trig, I would have thought you'd think #2 would be a good thing. About 10 years ago, we went to Churchill Downs for a tour and they took us to a retirement farm for throughbreds. I never asked how it was funded though.

Believe me when I tell you, I would do things a lot differently if I knew what I know now. No fighting my friend. Just a discussion.

Chihuahua Cock is just that...the absolute worst, I don't give a fuck if he's a jew or not or white or black or Dem or Rep.

I miss nothing in this mother fucker including how y'all actually think and feel and what the fuck you'll say next.

Yours is a reasonable answer.    1 and 2 are your preferences.
Here's the issues with those.
1. Mike would tell you being a buggy horse is inhumane.    I will tell you, many of the Amish horses are going for meat.     This option wouldn't even come close to handling the horses available.
2. Think of an owner that buys 10 horses per year.   5 of those horses are still racing after a year.   That owner will be paying for 5 retirees per year.     5 x $500 per month = $30k/year
Sorry, never going to happen.   For most owners, these aren't pets, they are expenses and when they don't come close to covering costs, they are gone.

Sorry, but this is the reality of the decisions that need to be made and the 1000's of horses that need to be retired/disposed of each year.

Hey, I try not to take it to serious. I'm to old to let the comments aggravate me. I do enjoy the the horse talk and handicapping of some of the "plopsters". Like you, I'd like to make a nice score once in awhile too. Tomorrow, I take a trip down to Plainridge.

That's why I'm getting crazy.

I need to let all my energies absorb into capping and psychic work lol.

It's humbling too, I'm ok with that.

I think we all need to be grounded, that's my grounding.

Doesn't mean winning is bad, you still ground and are exhausted anyway.

Bust ass Sunday forward and then things loosen up and the week's tail to get back to that hobby.

Degenerate gambler, nigga please, I don't particularly like risking money, I'm fortunate that my wagering is way within my financial comfort zone.

Dougie, I am simply presenting the ethical questions that need to be discussed and answered if we are truly concerned about the humane treatment of these athletes at retirement.   We can ignore the question and tell ourselves these horses are all living nice lives on beautiful retirement properties, but that just isn't true.

Everyone found Lucparks stories interesting.
