I don't bet very often but love to bet the big cards like Hambo day,  Pace day or BC program.
Don't really have time to handicap everyday races so I keep it to those events.
However I'm  so turned off the last few years by the very SMALL chance if making some cash that I will only watch the replays the next day now.
I think the average payoff would not exceed $3.10 in those races and the money will fall last tote and bring a 5-2 horse to 4-5.
It's gotten that smart money is cannibalizing the pools and the average Joe won't stand a chance.
I have a better chance of making money by betting sports and that's what I do when I want some action.

A rare very good post on this site,      It keeps getting worse with each month as its underlay after underlay and if you can not beat a race when a super value underlay makes the race a must play then why play,   In poker its huge value to a game when someone is a non figure but these days in horse racing the group of dead money are live money gamblers and that makes no sense,   Years ago one of the top winning players i ever met told me that the biggest sucker players motto is its better to cash than rip and that is so insane because if your cashing on some of these 3 dollar horses you have to go broke.

Go look at results charts from the "old days"...you NEVER saw a $2.10 payoff anywhere, very rarely an odds-on favorite unless it was the Open or a stakes race.
And if you had a heavy favorite it would pay like $3.20, $2.60, $2.40
Now it's $3.20 2.10 2.10.

I think you are 100% right. There was a periodical named "American Turf monthly" which used to make the same points you just did. I try to pick my spots and look for some value in certain races. Most of the horseplayers i've met who've have had a modicum of success seem to "pick their spots" and have great money management skills.

Monticello is difficult to handicap with just a program or form imo,but if you have a reliable "connections " to the backstretch,it can be very helpful!
