This is advice from a guy 70+ years old who made a lot of money in harness racing.  I started when I was 12 years old and still keep a few mares and retired old horses.  I am not angry or bitter about the industry.  It made me money and helped me raise three great kids who are all 6 digit money-makers in the business and medicine world.  But this is what I would tell you now if you were my kid.

A)  If you are young, go to school.  Get a college degree.  Get a job and don't go anywhere near the harness business.  Do not bet.  Do not think there is anything glamorous about harness racing or racetracks.
B)  If you do try take a shot you will never find anyone who will teach you or help you without taking advantage of you or robbing and cheating you.
3)  You will NOT make any money unless you are already wealthy and you can buy good babies and even then you have to get really lucky.  Odds are really bad against you.
4) Be prepared to have NO LIFE!  Your friends with regular jobs ( white collar or small business owners) will have fun and family and security and you will work 24 hours a day with zero chance for reward.
5) If you are older than 17 forget it.  You will never be good at it, especially if you want to be a driver.
6) All of the above apply now more than ever because harness racing is a dead industry.  There is zero future.
7) For every Brian Sears and Ron Burke, there are 200 drivers and trainers who qualify for food stamps.  Most have no health insurance.

PLEASE LISTEN:   I am an old guy.  I made a great living in harness racing, but it was tough and gritty.  And that was back in the days when there was tons of money to be made.  Now there is none.  Please run for your life and find some other job.  I never allowed any of my three children near the horse business.  They thank me every day.  If you were my son or daughter I would discourage you until you hated me.

I to am 70+ and agree 100%.
This could have easily ben written by me.
Many of the successful trainers/drivers of my era are now broke with no retirement plan but social security, and not much of that because we fudged to much on our taxes.

Good Luck and as Red Skelton would sign of saying  God Bless.

One of the first things my trainer told me when i got in the business is it cost just as much to feed a cheap horse as good one. Buy good stock and stick to the slot states and there is still money to be made. High End claimer and as well NW with state sired stock go for good money and competition not to tough. If and when slots decrease or percentages change time to think about a new hobby or career. Still plenty of decent trainers out there that you can trust.

come with me to obs with 20 grand and we can get 5 REALLY nice horses. I bet you all 5 will race, 3 will win and 1-2 will be upper level allow. or over stakes, maybe more.....I know you are too in love with the sbreds to do this.

Iím looking for advice on getting into harness racing. Who are some trainers that are good to work for?  I know horses, my background is in Thoroughbred racing, but I want to break into Standardbreds. I want to learn about the equipment, training methods, and eventually learn to jog. Would anyone be willing to take a chance on someone who knows horses, but is green to the sport of harness racing?

Iíve been reading through this forum and you all donít paint a pretty picture of the sport.

Your going the wrong direction....stay in the tbreds and get a better trainer like me, who wont crook you....I dont train other peoples horses though, only my own.

Swale...No offense but why would u switch from tbreds to harness??

I just want to try something different.  And I have really grown a strong fondness of the Standardbred breed.  They are a lot more fun to work around than Thoroughbreds.  I'm at a crossroads in my horse career.  I can either go back to Thoroughbreds, stick to horse farm work, or give up horses altogether....nei ther of which I want to do.  I've always been a casual fan of harness racing and after having worked with some Standardbreds for the last year, I've started to follow the sport more closely.  Maybe I'm having a midlife crisis, but I want to work with Standardbreds.... learn how to jog and train them...hopefully working my way up to 2nd trainer or something.

So you've worked with standardbreds for the past year but you're looking for advice.  It sounds like bullshit to me.

I've been fucking this girl for the past year but I'm not sure if it feels good or not.  Please help.  Any advice?

I've worked with 'some' Standardbreds in a farm setting...a few STB mares resided at the farm I most recently worked at...
