More evidence harness racing is thriving

"Thriving" on government handouts. When much less that 20% of the purses is coming from the customers, that is not "thriving", that is a house of cards. I hope I see the day when the handouts are eliminated and the industry has to offer customer a product they want.

Thriving sucking on the teat of government. The former governor of Pennsylvania went after the handouts and the Philadelphia newspaper has exposed harness racing several times. Keep your head buried in the sand and you will be the first person crying when the government shuts off the handouts.

In Pennsylvania, approximately 85% to 90% of harness racing (Standardbred) purses are funded through the state-regulated Pennsylvania Race Horse Development Trust Fund (RHDTF). Traditional wagering on the races themselves (the pari-mutuel handle) only accounts for the remaining 10% to 15% of the purse pools.

Similar to Pennsylvania and Ontario, the direct pari-mutuel handle (the money actually wagered by bettors) makes up a very small percentage of the harness racing purse pool in Ohio—accounting for roughly 5% to 10% of total purses.

The remaining 90% to 95% of Ohio's harness racing purses is heavily bankrolled by alternative gaming revenues, specifically Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) and commercial casino tax distributions.
