Some final thoughts on Derby 2026
« on: Today at 09:42:26 AM »
With the big race behind us, here's a few observations I made on this great race.

One of the best performances was by #7 Danon Bourbon. While he and my #5 So Happy chases the speed early on, I worried that both would fold like a tent. and finish far up the track. But while my So happy folded like a cheap suit, Danon Bourbon sprung to the front. I knew that our friend Trigger has touted him all along, I jumped up and cheered him on. And while he didn't win, I though he ran a great race. If he came out of the race sound, I'd point him to the Preakness. He would fit well in there at that shorter distance.

Renegade, mugged and jostled at the start, dropped way back to 15th early but came like a rocket in the lane. While reporters today feel he may have been the best in this field, the 40 year jinx of no wins from post position #1 continues for the Derby. I'm not sure where he'll go next, but I think he should take a well deserved 5 week rest and shoot for the Belmont.

I am happy for trainer Cherie DeVaux's victory in the Derby. She continues to make history and that's a good thing. I've been gambling since i'm 15 years old. And while harness racing has had successful woman trainers for a long time, the blueblood throughbreds has been slow to see a lot of success for the ladies. And while I always thought it would be Linda Rice who would make history at the Derby some day, i'm happy DeVaux's horse won the roses.

I am also thrilled that the great sire Curlin gets his first Derby winner. After three runner-ups, including Journalism last year, he was overdue to sire a Derby winner. I was always a big fan of Curlin and loved his running style. Congrats to the big fella.

And finally, the race itself. The Derby, much like the Super Bowl transcends sports and the moment. About 5 minutes before the post I left the poker take and when into the Draft Kings area to "people watch". My bets were made early yesterday. The place was hopping and packed. Young girls sitting around with their cocktails betting their birthdays on tris and supers. Picking horses by their name or number. Young men, making believe they knew anything about this "game" blowing big bucks to impress anyone who watched them. Housewives dipping into their "hidden stash" looking to brag they picked that elusive winner. And then crusty old guys like me. Deep into their racing forms, still trying to reach the dream i've been chasing most of my life. And will continue to.

I hope everyone had a great day yesterday. If you made money, i'm thrilled for you. If not, don't worry.....we'll get them yet!
Have a great Sunday.
