Monticello Race 2
« on: February 25, 2026, 02:27:19 PM »
Take a look at the second race today at Monticello. Greg Merton did everything in his power to take the 3-2  #1 horse Goby Hanover, out of that race (my opinion). Let's a 33-1 shot take the lead - without a retake at the quarter - then refuses to come first over after the half - allows himself to get boxed in behind a dead-legged leader (reminder at 33-1) then while chocking the horse down the entire time (the ol' left-handed head turn) finally gets the horse to go off stride at the top of the stretch. Seriously, that horse had plenty of pace - even the horse got so pissed at the drive - he said "f-this, take me back to the barn".  Well played Mr Merton.....now we know why you are the "Star" at Monti!!!!

Actually, I had a $1 "Show" bet .......my point is, even for Monticello that was pretty obvious.  Out of the Merton "clan", you get a better effort from Mike than Greg or Tom most times.

I have been going to the "Mighty M" for over 55 years. What you saw in the 2nd race there wasn't a rarity. LOL!

I have no idea why he gave the drive he did, you would need to ask him. All I know is what I saw....the horse was climbing the back of Sowers at the quarter......99 times out of a 100 the favorite will retake from the 33-1 shot (from the 8 hole by the way). And when he didn't get out at the half......well you knew where this was going. Since this was a non-winner of 2, MAYBE the trainer wanted to hit the board - but not jump this 3-year-old into the next condition???? Regardless, Merton gave a crap drive ......and I lost my dollar!!!! ngc3

And get no money for the owners on top of it!

This race was even worse than the maiden race that NOBODY wanted to WIN last week!

What grandstand?

I was there a couple of times last summer.  I saw a grandstand there across from the paddock. Couldn't tell if there were any people there during the races.
