Tariffs when shipping north?
« on: March 07, 2025, 05:52:56 PM »
Has anyone read what the tariff situation would (if any) be when shipping a horse north of the boarder to race?

Go on temporary papers. Tariffs are only on purchases

SO MUCH WINNING.  TARIFFS ARE SO EASY.

Paulick lays out what a disaster this may be for racing.

Well, there's the accurate snapshot of where this is and what the impact could be, for now at least. Thanks for posting this. I never knew if public comments and the like ever made a difference, but at least we don't have to go with innuendo and rumor. Good to get accurate info at least for now.

From what I just read on a Canadian web site, any USA born horse when crossing into Canada will have to pay a 25% tariff on the value of the horse. (Not sure who or how value is determined). If horse is not sold while in Canada & returns to the USA within 30 days the owner/s can apply to get their tariff refunded. This tariff would apply each time a horse crosses the boarder. So in the scenario where a USA born colt races in both the Metro & then returns for the Breeders Crown there would be a total of 50% of the value of the horse being held by the government until the paperwork for returning the tariff is completed & then how long would one have to wait to get the refund back? What a nightmare!! If this is all correct why would you bother with heading north to race?

In the end, I don't think it will go down that way. If it does, it will be an administrative nightmare and a massive negative impact to many. I think the path of least resistance, easiest, etc., way is going to be something more like the way auctions handle the sales tax issue (at least with the respective state where the auction is being held).

There is no way to avoid controversy as to "value" and the process, and I am sure more. I think the tariff simply cast it's net and this is just one thing that got captured. I don't think this is what the tariff was intended for.

I don't see this affecting AMac and his operation. Just as simple as tacking it onto the shareholder's bill. 73cv.2

You don’t know if the tariff was intended for this and neither does Trump. They just throw shit on the wall with no real thought process.

So are the Canadian border guards going to have microchip readers?  I’ll take my chances every horse I ship up will be by a Canadian sire. If that doesn’t work then all my horses are worth 2k and I’ll pay the $500 to race for the stake money up there. Y’all stay home
