That is a lot of coin for a standardbred.  140 stud fees/year for 9 years (just as an example, till he is 19), works out to a stream of 9  $7mm payments.  If you discount that at 6% you wind up with about $50 million present value.

One, I don't buy into the mathematical formulas to arrive at net worth. I don't know how many he's breeding a year on the shares vs. seasons, and I don't know if the number is 100, 120, or 140, but the farm is breeding on their own dime. The variables can be whatever we want them to be, LOL. Regardless, money and math are two very different things. Two, one night of the BC is not going to cause such a drastic shift. It still comes down to how much his yearlings are selling for----the commercial breeders and their ROI.

Strong #'s! I know people look at averages, medians, etc., and they can be distorted. But that's a big number, 51, and a 175k average is very strong. Thanks for posting this.

 Most of the shares are owned by major breeders, there are no breedings really available. So this benefits the breeders to make it seem Walners yearlings are worth more or in the rare instances the breedings are sold. They are creating an artificial market place and trying toset the entire breeding market higher. So the 50k price is bs in a way.

oh, i got a great deal buying a walner for $100k , hell the stud fee on its own is $50 k
as you correctly say the majority of breedings are held  internally so very few actually change hands at all for any price

Right!  Then they can tell you Gimpanzee or Karl are a bargain at 25K.  They are creating a fake market..  I also think the Breeders have got The Red Mile to be a little less then a mile like Northfield was a year ago. Fake fast times help to inflate prices.

If the 50k stud fee is true, all this means that the big commercial breeders will be exchanging breedings with each other so there will be little if any out-of-pocket capital to be laid out!  Also, what little guys will be buying breedings at this price?
