Aside from the antisemitism and racism, I am guessing people just don't want to look at the rural version of urban decay. It is a sociological, economic, mass/peer behavioral, and so much more. Those who thought a casino alone would revitalize the area and bring about some form of gentrification only had to look at Atlantic City to realize that's nothing more than (false) hope and conjecture. Obviously, gentrification, some form of it, and all the results that come from that takes a whole lot more. None of that took place there so it never happened. Period.

Many of my friends who used to be part of the Catskills bungalow colony summer migration actually still go there, many to different towns and areas, but even with that, their lives are much different now and so are their summers.
