If true, Gural might have to dig into those sportsbook massive profits or close everything down and get out. He failed

Is this a “new” veto (since the new legislature was seated)?
Reread It

Yes. As of this morning. Someone told me a rumor. Not confirmed.

Gov. Murph has 7 day from the end of the legislative session to sign. If not, the bill is dead. That does not happen until March 18.

Why is Murphy playing around with something that actually worked in New Jersey, as he can see the results of a booming breeding renaissance there as well as increase in handle by an tremendous amount?  It makes NO sense unless he is worried about money for illegal migrants in the state!

He did this with many bills presented from the lame duck session. He wants new legislature to vote on it.

 Governor Murphy of New Jersey
He has recently vetoed a bill that would have extended annual purse subsidy payments made to new Jersey’s thoroughbred and standardbred tracks in the vicinity of $20million dollars a year.
Murphy vetoed 12 bills in all, using what is called a pocket veto. This type of voting power applies only to bills sent to the governor’s desk in the final 10 days of a legislative session.
If they are unsigned within seven days of the end of a session those bills are vetoed without being sent back to the Legislature.

Typical liberalism at its best !

Murphy vetoed most spending bills by the lame duck legislature.  He wants new legislature to write spending bills.  He says he still supports racing in NJ and subsidies but new reps will have to approve it.

2024 subsidy is already allotted and approved.   This bill is for 5 years, from 2025 through 2029. Legislature is reluctant to approve the subsidies for that long a term.  A lot can happen with the state budget during that time.

I did not know that. There is no immediate urgency & time to work things out.

"It passed through the State Senate by a vote of 35-1. That followed the passing of the bill by the state Assembly of 73-0"

Yes, real reluctance there! ngc3 ngc3 ngc3 ngc3

Murphy vetoed 12 bills in all, using what is called a pocket veto. That type of veto applies only to bills sent to the governor's desk in the final 10 days of a legislative session. If the governor does not sign such bills within seven days of the end of a session those bills are vetoed without being sent back to the Legislature.

“If we didn't get this money, it would be a disaster,” said Dennis Drazin, the chairman and CEO of Darby Development, the management team that operates Monmouth. “We'd either have to cut days or purses.”

Drazin admits he was alarmed when first hearing news of the veto and he immediately placed a call to Murphy. Drazin said he heard back within 15 minutes and the governor reassured him that future purse subsidies remain very much alive.

“I spoke with him and he wholeheartedly supports the industry, but he did not feel a bill like this should get passed through a lame-duck session,” Drazin said. “He is committed to continue to work on it and get it done through the budget process. I take him at his word. He has been supportive of the industry ever since he's been in office and he says he will get it done, just not the way it was being handled. I trust this governor. He made a commitment and I am taking him at his word. If he had said, 'I'm vetoing it', that's it, we'd be having a different conversation.”
