Quirky betting systems

A group of us would go to Northfield Park back in the 80's. There was a driver whose last name was King who drove there occasionally. We noticed during the post parade when he held his whip in his left hand he would win even though he was right handed. Maybe it was just a coincidence , but the system seem to work for quite awhile.

Somebody told me once that Herve had two helmets, one with a blue dot on the top and one with a red dot.
Depending which helmet he wore was a signal he was live. Sounds very plausible to he honest.

When Cat Manzi would walk around the track with the outrider he was always off the board in those races. I saw him lose the final in some series doing just that and he had his choice of 5 horses that race. He made a lot of money gambling.

What was the call ?

It took two guys and the betting clerk. One person stood by the tv and as they left the starting wire, he would raise one of his hands indicating which horse was leaving first. If the horse was the favorite, he wouldn't raise his hand. If the one horse left he would raise one finger on his left hand two fingers for the number two horse and so on. A person by the window would say the number out loud and the clerk would punch out a preset number set of tickets. The clerk would get a percentage of the winnings. If they were winning they might punch out tickets until the machines shut off. They used 10,50 and 100 dollar windows. It worked out good until the drivers got wind of it.

My dad had a signal he gave to my mom when he was driving. If he was sitting on his whip in post parade don't bet. If he was holding it bet the farm! 

I loved that farm, It was a shame when we had to move!

When Eddie Cobb,s horses went from 7-1 to 7-5 at Yonkers or Roosevelt, that was the surest signal you could have ever seen.

I had a good friend who tried just about every betting system he could think of over the years starting in the 70's. The only one he had some success at least for a while was betting the favorite to show and if it loss keep doubling the show bet till it won. As long as he found a track with the favorites having a high percent of in the money he did ok.

Knew a driver that was known for taking envelopes. When he would post parade he put colored tape on the shaft by right foot with the color corresponding with win,place,show. Red or white or blue. No tape meant no go!

Alot of the driver gambling went by the wayside when they started getting paid by the tracks. The diluted tri & super pools today make it difficult for a few guys in a race to pocket 3,4,5 hundred apiece. The pies of yesteryear are now cupcakes!

That is so true because there were monster pools to bet into, but no more. Now it's all about getting to the line first.
