New York's program is not working. Oh, it works for a few but over all it needs to be revamped. In New York, over the past 10 years they have been distributing about $15 million every year yet, the foal crop has been hoovering around an all time low. They now number 50% less than when they did not have slot money! In 2021 they had less foal nominated to the program than they did in 2003, the last year before slots! Last year for the first time in the history of the NYSS program, they bred less than 1,000 mares in the entire state! In 1981, there was over 4,200 mares bred in NY.
What is going on? Why do we have only one trotting stallion that compete with the Grand Circuit and only one pacing sire? More money is not the answer.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I spoke with Jimmy Takter a few years ago, he told me buying a New York bred yearling was akin to giving yourself cancer. He said the track surfaces were so bad in NY. he wouldn't race a old claimer on them, say nothing about a talented young horse.

Takter was right then and more so now.  Most forget Buffalo, first turn is not a turn but a corner and usually as hard as the thruway.  Others tracks are just maybe okay but you are still pounding the babies around 1/2 mile tracks. With Vernon and Tioga the exceptions.   Don’t call Albany for an answer to any question.  Either no answer or the person who is to call you back forgets or is nonexistent.
