Years ago (many) it was said if 30% of favorites won , not necessarily morning line favorites, the race secretary was going a good job.  It now seems that has flip flopped to 70 or more win.   There are just a very few race secretaries now, its people who put races together.  They use the crazy   TM rating system that no one can figure out.  Harness racing is on a very steep downhill roll and the % of winning favorites is a large part of that trend.

If anyone thought it was difficult to appeal to a new and younger fan for harness racing on any scale in the past, you will find it almost impossible now.
  Harness racing made the conscious choice to give up on the live product and concentrate on the all sources handle. In doing so, in reality it gave up any marketing teeth it had.
 Now, that the sports betting is where all the effort is at, harness racing has lost the more market share to an entity like the NFL.
 The biggest lies ever told were: When mom and her friends come to the Racino to play slots, dad and the boys will go over to the other side and play the horses. Also, when we have the slot money feeding the purse account, owners will buy more and better horses and that will fill the grandstand with fans and gamblers.
 So when track owners defund the only proprietary marketing tool they have and decide to enter the market of on line wagering with a tired and dull product with great risk and little returns, is there any wonder this industry goes backward every year?

I recall the complaints 50 years ago about harness racing having low prices, too many favorites winning, too many odd-on favorites, etc.   But it does seem today that EVERY race has an odds-on favorite.   Getting a fair price for a favorite is getting more and more difficult.

Tracks owned by casinos don't care about the handle. Most are run by casinos that down deep don't want racing. The only one that complains about the handle is the Meadowlands which is not coupled with any casino. They rely on state subsidies and a small amount from Sports Betting. And every year across the country the handle will go down for there is no new blood and whatever regular customers there are will be dying off.
