Worse than ugly

Latest update is that Krueger has a broken elbow, broken shoulder, and a punctured lung

If 2 horses finish, it can"t be a no contest

The rest of the equation is beyond my pay grade

Let me guess: James Hysell caused the accident?

A spill in Monday night’s first race at Pompano Park sent driver Matt Krueger to the hospital and resulted in toteboard overload. Although only two horses eventually finished the race after the accident approaching the three-quarters, the race was not declared “no contest” as the track stewards placed all four non-finishers as if they dead-heated for show.

The accident occurred when pacesetter Open Skies, driven by James Hysell, suddenly fell as betting favorite Watchwhatmyfeetdo (Andy Santeramo) and Gemalous (Mike Simons) began to move up on the outside. When Open Skies fell, Follow The Dream (Andy Shetler), Persephonie (Krueger) and De Valeria (Aaron Byron) were directly behind and were unable to avoid contact. Krueger was the only driver to be transported to a local hospital for his injuries.

Krueger, who also works as an assistant to trainer Tony Alagna, suffered a fractured shoulder and elbow that will require surgery, as well as a punctured lung, according to a Facebook posting by his girlfriend Dani Copeland. She also posted that Krueger was awake and alert.

This was the second time this year that Open Skies has fallen during a race at Pompano Park. On Jan. 21, Open Skies was on the outside at the back of the field at the three-quarters when she went down.

As the 3-5 betting favorite, Watchwhatmyfeetdo returned $3.20 to win and $2.60 to place, while Gemalous returned $7.80 to place. All seven horses returned $2.10 to show.

Also, all possible trifecta combinations 5-7-1, 5-7-2, 5-7-3 and 5-7-4 were paid, as were all 12 possible superfecta combinations. The total pool of the race was $1,217, and with all tickets paid, it left a total minus pool of $60, according to track announcer Gabe Prewitt.

Looks like they did something to please the crowd! Instead of giving everyone their money back, big deal, if you bet it you certainly were prepared to lose it, they allowed a lot of people to cash by paying off lots of combinations! I hope they could afford the $60 minus pool! And incidentally, the lead horse caused the problem and should have been dqed and no payoffs with her. Interesting that they payed a mutual involving horses that didn't finish! Maybe unprecedented in racing!
