"I don't want Canadian cars, I don't want Canadian parts, I don't want Canadian anything” is the latest tantrum from Donald Trump on Truth Social on Sunday afternoon, melting down after his trade war with Canada completely unraveled.
Across the border, Canadian officials stopped treating the White House like a diplomatic partner and started treating it like a punchline.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew laid out the reality plainly: "I think Donald Trump is very weak. I think America is weaker around the world today than it was a year ago. He’s about to get slaughtered in the midterms and the cost of living is the number one issue and he’s completely out of touch with the cost of living of Americans."
After blowing up bilateral negotiations with 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, Trump expected Ottawa to fold. Instead, Canada answered with immediate, dollar-for-dollar retaliatory duties on billions of dollars in American steel, aluminum, and manufactured exports.
Faced with an economic counterpunch, Trump took to his phone to demand that every business in a sovereign neighboring country pack its bags.
"Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately," Trump wrote. "When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!"
The United States and Canada share nearly $900 billion in annual cross-border trade. Modern manufacturing, especially the American automotive sector, relies on tightly integrated supply chains where components cross the northern border multiple times before a vehicle is finished.
Levying a 50 percent tax on those parts does not force Canada to surrender. It jacks up production costs for American auto plants and raises the sticker price for American families.
Trump promised his voters that the entire world would bend to his tariff threats within days.
Instead, Canadian leaders matched his penalties dollar for dollar, called out his weakness on international television, and left the self-proclaimed master negotiator whining on social media because he couldn't get his way.
Art of the deal, folks.
