TRUMP’S LAWSUIT BACKFIRES! BBC moves to subpoena Ivanka, Don Jr. and Jared Kushner over what Trump REALLY intended on January 6th!
Donald Trump demanded $10 billion from the BBC over its editing of his infamous Jan. 6 speech. Now that same lawsuit could force three members of his own family to answer questions about what Trump actually intended that day.
The BBC asked a federal judge today for permission to subpoena Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner, arguing that all three “without question have personal knowledge” relevant to Trump's state of mind surrounding the speech.
Trump sued after a 2024 BBC documentary spliced together portions of his remarks delivered more than 50 minutes apart, making it sound as though he told supporters to march to the Capitol and “fight like hell” in the same passage.
The BBC apologized for the misleading edit but denies that it defamed Trump. And because Trump's lawsuit puts his intentions and reputation directly at issue, the broadcaster now wants his own family under oath.
Ivanka and Don Jr. were with Trump as he revised and delivered the speech, according to the BBC's filing. Kushner, meanwhile, drafted a proposed statement for Trump condemning the violence as the Capitol attack unfolded, but the statement was never issued.
But getting them into depositions hasn’t been easy.
The BBC says police prevented its lawyers from serving Ivanka and Kushner at their Miami home because of their Secret Service protection. An attempt to serve Don Jr. at Trump Tower also failed, the Secret Service said it couldn't accept the subpoenas on their behalf, and Trump's lawyers declined to accept them.
So now the BBC wants the judge to authorize another method, such as certified mail or service through their attorneys.
This isn’t the first time Trump's enormous lawsuit has opened doors he probably preferred to keep closed.
After Trump initially claimed the documentary damaged his businesses and brand, the BBC sought extensive financial records involving his assets and hundreds of Trump-related businesses. Trump subsequently dropped those claims and narrowed the case to alleged damage to his personal reputation.
Now the BBC wants to question his own children about that reputation – and about the day at the center of the entire case. Trump is finding out there’s a big problem with suing someone for $10 billion.
The defendants get to defend themselves.
