A judge orders the MAGA-controlled Kennedy Center to pay over $250,000 to a jazz musician who canceled his appearance in protest of Donald Trump.
This is a humiliating black eye for the White House...
“The Trump-controlled Kennedy Center tried to silence opposition to its illegal name change by filing a meritless lawsuit against jazz musician Chuck Redd," said Redd's attorney Lisa Banks.
“The court rightly dismissed that breach of contract lawsuit, finding there was no contract and no damages, and was brought against Mr. Redd based on his protected opposition," she added.
The Center, whose Board is currently stuffed full of Trump-aligned cretins, sued Redd after he pulled out of an appearance because the Board had voted to slap our criminal, fascist, pedophiliac President's name on the center.
Redd correctly identified the name change as illegal, and a separate judge eventually came to the same conclusion. Trump's name has since been removed.
The musician's decision to cancel his appearance at the annual Christmas Eve Jazz Jam was a particularly powerful act of protest because he had hosted the event for twenty years previously.
In their lawsuit filed in March 2026, the Center tried to claim that Redd was in breach of contract and alleged that he “chose to abuse the public forum provided to him by the Center to make a political statement, and to deprive the public of the concert he promised.” D.C. Judge Tanya M. Jones Bosier eventually dismissed the case because Redd never actually signed a contract for the holiday concert.
You can't breach a contract you never signed.
Judge Bosier has now ordered the Center to pay Redd $252,479.70 for his attorneys’ fees and other legal fees. They have just 45 days to cough up the money.
Banks called the order "appropriate" and said that “no citizen should have to spend time and money fending off baseless and politically motivated lawsuits filed by the Trump Administration.”
