Odds On Bloodbath
« on: December 16, 2025, 12:23:49 PM »
I lost count around the 5M mark. Always a bit taken aback when otherwise smart and successful people get involved in the horse game. The losses must be staggering if you add up all the yearling purchases, stake payments, training and shipping fees, etc. Game is hard enough but to think you're going to buy numerous expensive yearlings, go craps on the track and then proceed to breed to just about every unsuccessful stallion is just gross incompetence. Who the hell is in charge of the racing operations and breeding of that outfit. Whoever it is, they have failed on a scale never seen before in my lifetime.

with the mares he owns if he were to just sell his foals at the sale I believe within 3-5 years he would begin to see profits. Dig closely into the pedigree of his home breds with year. He could get out by selling foals instead of trying to race every single one. Broodmare band is better than most farms. I have no association with the guy but I can acknowledge his mares pedigree.

You can dig as much as you want and I'll concede they have really quality mares. But breeding for 90% is a disaster and this guy has no clue what the hell he's doing, breeding to Lazrus, Betting Line and now his own stallion. He's tying up quality mares for five years, as most don't catch in a five year span, with ZERO to show for it. Actually even worse as he's compounded the loss 100X by putting them into training and absorbing the tremendous costs of all of that. And if he took your advice and sold his yearlings he still would get destroyed and most wouldn't even cover their costs. At the end of the day this is just another example of someone getting involved in a game with no expertise and no experience and losing millions. And that's why you see the exodus and it's not going to end well. Maybe Hanover or Diamond Creek might take one or two off his hands but no body wants to be in the breeding game unless they have a black type trotting mare. And I think they will be very cautious when the time rolls down as to bidding them up even though they control the apparatus as many in the industry are skeptical of the platform as they don't show who the bidders are during the sale.

I don’t think you need to worry about his money. He has been doing this for a long time.  Oh and at one point was one of the largest bettors in horse racing. One article I read about him estimated around 20 million a year through the windows.

I can assure you I'm not worried about the guys' money. And okay he's been incredibly unsuccessful for a long time. And of course he was a winning bettor, fits your narrative so we will go with that. It's a discussion board about harness racing and I find it interesting how otherwise super talented people, outliers if you will, seemingly lose all their business acumen the moment they invest in this game. Nothing personal as I don't know the guy and wish him no ill will. He's obviously flush beyond the norm and good for him. But the fact remains that the scope of loss is staggering.

You and others always on here worrying about how much money someone loses. Owning horses of any kind is a hobby, you are going to lose money. And for the top end owners, if they make money one year they have to buy more horses or give it to the government

One of the inherent features of being wealthy.....is self-expression. What he does, how much he has, and so on.....who cares. Rhetorical question.

He's selling 34 broodmares today. Most have had minimal success as broodmares. The expense is huge, but he's been in the game a long time, so money is no object for him. I'm curious how many broodmares he is keeping.

The only way you can make a profit in this business is to have one go to stud. Racing horses will put you in the negative balance cat.
SBSW when at stud was making the owners 12.2 Million $ a year every year. Expenses are negligible compared to racing staking...
Any other endeavor is not financially beneficial.
It's a great hobby however.
