A couple of weeks ago one of the biggest fixtures over the years past away,   I still remember his rough voice been heard when rooting for his horse in a stretch drive ,      Many friends attended his funeral and that made me happy.     When i think of racing to me its the characters and some crazy and some a little less crazy but that was a huge part of the everyday scene.   Not many characters left sad.

True Legend of the game !!  I remember when he was down as trainer for Steve Bregman in the late 80's. I always loved to chat with him as a kid. Longest serving tout north of the border. Rest well Shelly, you earned it !!

Spending more or as much time in hotel rooms over the last 30 years i met tons of characters in gambling but not many if any came from horsemen,     Just look at interviews with CHRIS CHRISTOFOROU  or RANDY WAPLES or BOB MCLURE and you will see people that are not interesting with very little humor in their system and like it or not that is the truth as i never read something that makes me laugh or smile when it comes to standarbred horsemen and even my poker games with horsemen were super boring .              A famous regular in Toronto was a guy they called WOODBINE BILLY and he was f....ing insane and none of his stories were boring and i remember him telling me ine day in university he was super broke and had a 10 STAR HORSE at FORT ERIE and he looked at his roommates prized possession a mini grandfather clock his grandmother gave him and he was off to the pawn shop and hitch hiked to fort erie and went in and bet it all without leaving a dollar to get home with as he told me why leave a dollar that would be 5 after the horse won and he would win,  but he lost and then my favourite part is when he told me i learned a huge lesson and i was waiting for the insanity and he said that i was not good enough back then to have 10 Stars and i loved the insanity he provided

I remember him well, taped glasses and his plastic bag he always carried......I used to call it his  briefcase.

i remember he was in line at GREENWOOD and he had a celery in his back pocket and the guy behind him had this land on his program and flipped out in fear,      Or a time in the seventh game of a LEAFS series he used his program to shut the TV and said no one wants to watch this shit,   MAN was that funny

He was also good friends with another huge gambler  that passed away being former race track announcer at Orangeville being PAUL DUBIEL and he was another race track personality with his great call when KIETH WAPLES won a race of faster faster cries the master with a horse called TEDDY BE READY who won the race.  It did not make sense with two super hyper people being best friends but but both are gone now.

"After completing a blind draw, it was determined that second place and $400 in prize money would go to Sheldon Silver of Toronto, Ontario, finishing with a bankroll of $117.50. Silver’s involvement in harness racing goes back over 30 years ago, when he was an owner, trainer and driver. He now considers himself a fan and takes pleasure in watching the simulcasting at Woodbine Racetrack."

There was a guy around 40 years ago and i did not know him or his name but he used to jump the fence to save 2 bucks when entering the track but around 10-20 times a year he made between 20-40 thousand dollar show bets and i always got involved and it was not a winning move for me as i dont recall him loosing one but i heard he lost huge on GUTS but i was not there that day,        This guy really irked me in the wrong way as he would pick up uneaten food or coffee or go into the garbage for food and i could not believe he was still alive with his life style but one day he climed the fence at FLAMBORO and security caught him and kicked him out and that day he went to bet a DAVE WALL 3 horse entry that missed the board and did not get the bet in i was told

He never had a winner driving and i am not a 100 percent sure but i think he only trained a horse called ARMSTEAD KELLY but he did go down for PETER swift when he had a possitive but he never touched one of SWIFTYS HORSES,

He was connected to everyone in the game and was extremely well liked by everyone. He was connected to a montreal friend of mine that i met when I would travel to blue bonnets named Mel Kapman. Sadly the game has no more Shelley's.

I knew Shelly enough to nod and smile as we passed across each other,s path...met him as part of a group i used to  hang with....but in recent times lost track of him, except seeing him at the Woodbine T Breds on occasion...RIP Shelly
