Big M announcer
« on: November 02, 2025, 10:28:40 AM »
What’s with the it’s a torrid 1st quarter call almost every race.
A class that goes in 49 or 50 every race and he’s saying that a 27.3 is torrid?
Anyone else notice this?

It is quite clear that they are trying to make lemonade out of lemons; Ken was probably told to try and inject some "excitement" or throw in a few "wow"s to make watching an $8-$10 claimer palatable.

your right, exactly what the deal is
also how he calls finishes too close to call , needs a photo finish
most of us call call the winner from the replay

Bullet Bob Meyer did that at YR for decades, so and so is coming on.

I found Bullet Bob to be very monotone, and he basically called every race the same, such as, "they're off", so and so in the center of the track tries for the lead. He never made a race sound exciting either. Guess he figured New Yorkers wanted a no nonsense announcer, unlike Jack E Lee when he called at Roosevelt and Freehold.

His vantage point is right on the finish line but he's afraid to call a photo that's plainly obvious watching the race live.

Couldn’t agree with you more. The only one that irritated me as much back then was Marshall Cassidy at NYRA- sounded like a pretentious windbag, the forerunner of James Witherite. And then there’s the Vernon announcer.

GreenshoeDrawingC lear has many fans...

but in fact he is usually inaccurate, often uses improper voice inflections, attempts to add false excitement, when there is no reason to,  refuses to call obvious photos and flat out blows calls by missing big moves by horses mid race

I assume he "sounds nice" is why he has defenders

I always thought Bob called races like a robot, and he often totally missed horses coming wide in the stretch, he would announce 4 horses names down the stretch and a totally different horse would win.
Sometimes he hung out in the top floor of the clubhouse at YR, I spoke to him once or twice and his talking voice was not that robotic voice he used when calling races.
IMHO, Jack E Lee was the best caller I ever heard.

My issue with Jack E Lee is similar to the late Larry Lederman. Instead of just calling the race they made it more about themselves, Larry with his humor and Jack with his nicknames.

The kid that calls the races at Northfield, Kenny Livengood deserves a shot at the bigm or Mohawk.
