Mountaineer
« on: July 15, 2025, 09:01:40 PM »
I doubt many people here ever watch or bet there, I would dabble there occasionally. Ever since Mark Patterson resigned and then a few days later got escorted off the grounds, their watching and wagering experience has fallen off a cliff. They used to Never post drag and now they do. I enjoyed his pre race commentary, and now there is zip, except for rotten music and their casino promotions

Any details about how he got fired?  Their post time drag is incredible.  Almost 10 minutes after the posted time.

He didn't get fired, he resigned. He was supposed to finish his last week there, allegedly he got into it bad with management and ownership and was escorted off the property. The reason for his resignation was disagreements with the higher ups about multiple things. If you Google his name there is some info.

I used to watch Mountaineer.  It seemed like almost every race was a 5 claimer.

Mark Patterson was among the very best race track broadcast "talking heads" to ever do it IMO.

He wore a lot of hats, including Assistant Race Secretary.

Here's the recent job posting for a new Race Secretary. It pays $29,000 a year.

Most races there are cheap claimers with some starter allowances sprinkled in. So the quality of horses are not great, but the horses and jocks there always "try" unlike some tracks, but since Patterson left, it's unwatchable.

Mark was the only reason to tune in and play the Mountain. This year the racing looks quite larcenous. Always 3 or 4 horses way out of the races either beaking down or not trying.

The post drag has gotten worse if that's possible. Nothing like watching horses go in circles on the track for 10 minutes. Race 2 tonight I think the starter had been drinking some of that good West Virginia moonshine. The jockey on number 5 wasn't even on the horse because he was acting up and the jockey on the 6 fell off at the start because he clearly didn't think the gates would open with the jockey not being on the 5.. I don't think I've seen that before.

He is one of the few people that actually gave a damn.
There are fewer and fewer of those left

Mark knows every crevice of Mountaineer Racetrack ,   If you missed a night or two he would always let you know about any possible bias.    He knows the horses trainers and jockeys like the back of his hand.   I really enjoyed his commentary
