FWIW, the city owned grocery stores IMO is a silly idea.  Defunding the police doesn't mean getting rid of them; it could mean not giving local law enforcement a huge, separate budget to use however they deem fit. I'm a fan of augmenting law enforcement myself.

i grew up there. Went to school there. My Dad (Rest In Peace) was a cop there. NYC has changed. The "Big Apple" and "Fun City" are gone. When you go to visit, like I do, the cops tell you to stay off the subways. Homeless and beggars all over the place. A sad shame. Illegals and criminals prowl the streets around Times Square. It was the greatest city on earth. Great museums. Amazing cusine. Historic landmarks. Now overpriced so only that affluent can afford it. The election of this horrible man will drive a stake through the heart and soul on NYC. As a horseplayer, I think the odds of this guy winning the general is 4-5. So sad.

Has great history and culture.

The city needs a good scrubbing of the dirt and the dirt bags.

Anyone thinks that people can ruin a place likely find problems in everything and everywhere and many of the everyone.

Don't go then.  Don't point at every single fucking thing in the world out of your periphery and find problems, what a miserable existence.

Or do go, and find an experienced guide of your choosing, sharing the same culture, beliefs and politics as you and let them give you a proper tour.
