Well, that’s 1 way to not have to pay them what they earned up to their arrests.
Did they work for the track or the trainers?

They should split up the enforcement team. Send some East to Evangeline , the others west to Lonestar. tmbz1

none of the raids involve any "racetrack" employees--and they never did

undocumented immigrants are grooms, hot walkers, stall muckers, etc employed by trainers

if they did this at Delta--then every racetrack should be raided because they ALL have undocumented immigrants

I was at Saratoga  tbreds in the 90s and had a picnic table on the backstretch ....and I saw very close up what this type of raid looks like

The article quotes guys saying: 'There are jobs Americans won't do.' Half truth. They won't do them
for the subpar pay and little to no benefits that are offered and these illegal will accept.

you could say the same for picking tomatoes

both Chad Brown and Steve Asmussen had to pay fines for not having many workers on the H-2A and H-2B visa programs--the reason is because it is much cheaper to just pay them whatever they will accept under the table

agree raising the minimum wage across the board would fix a lot of these issues--but there is strong resistance by many to raise it.....(political reasons)

I am in NJ--the min is $15.49/hr--across the river in PA-the min is $7.25/hr

does anyone else see a problem with this?

Delaware's is $13.25. I am on the PA/DE border and there are 3 Wawa's within 3 miles of me, one in PA and the other 2 in Delaware. Why would anyone work at the one in PA for $7.25 per hour when they can drive 2 miles for $6 more in Delaware?

who could possibly live life on $7.25/hr?

why would the Pennsylvania lawmakers oppose raising it?

$7.25 is actually the minimum wage in 20 states. No one can live on that.

$7.25 is outrageously low and below the poverty line
i would hope/assume that is meant for students at the very least
as i have said take some of the money from the drivers and trainers
should the top 10 or 20 drivers be making $400-$700k per year , sure its a tough job and has its time limitations but that seems a bit much
should trainers who have 50 or more horses be getting 5% on top of their daily rate  , how often do they sit behind any of those horses, most of the time ( save fore the biggest money events) they are not even at the track when the horses race
also when a horse wins the owner gets billed $$ for the groom win, doesn't even come from the trainer
i would pay drivers 3%
i would pay trainers 3%
figure out a way that assistant trainers automatically get 1%
figure out a way that grooms get .5%
put the rest into a benefits plan

do that and you might get some decent people who want to work in the industry

EXCELLENT POST.  Drivers have gotten away with murder.  I would like to see the race office do driver draws as well so the best drivers don’t get to pick the best horses.  That’s the only fair way to do it.  It would also increase the handle because if you had a horse that laid over the field but a below average driver aboard it would make things very interesting.  Stop allowing the drivers to control the sport.  You enter your horse and draw for post position and driver too.  Don’t like it, don’t enter!

Absolutely. About 8 years back Saratoga's poster boy, Chad Brown got nailed by the NYS Department of Labor for failing to pay a minimum wage as well as overtime. So he paid all the back wages as well as fines and reconfigured his HR program. Then 2 years latter the fool did it again. He was fined something like $250,000 and paying the arrears once again.
Legal  or illegal, there is no excuse to exploit a person for free labor.

I am guessing this is tongue in cheek because if you are seriouis this is the dumbest idea and post ever...which is really saying something. I guess you believe that before every baseball game there should be a blind draw for players, and they should all be randomly assigned positions too lol.

This is fucking America, and if you are good you should have the opportunity to benefit from that. And if I was an owner or trainer I would obviously want the best driver I could get and not get a 5% guy just to make it more interesting for the bettors.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division (WHD) investigated Chad C. Brown Inc. and Chad Brown and found violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and H-2B non-immigrant visa program regulations. These violations included failing to pay overtime to grooms and hot walkers and not keeping proper time and payroll records. Violations of the H-2B program involved not paying offered wages, collecting payments from employees for visa costs, not reimbursing travel costs, and misrepresenting job terms.
Brown and his company agreed to a federal consent judgment to pay a total of $1,617,673 in back wages, liquidated damages, and civil penalties. This amount included $575,233 for FLSA violations affecting 150 employees, $46,776 in civil penalties for FLSA violations, $918,682 for H-2B back wages to 86 employees, and $76,981 in civil penalties for H-2B violations.
Brown is also required to implement a comprehensive H-2B compliance program. This case underscores the importance of adhering to labor laws, particularly in sectors employing seasonal workers.
