Equipment changes
« on: January 25, 2025, 11:06:38 AM »
What happens when a trainer declares equipment changes for a horse and the horse is scratched for that day, after the changes are made public at the track ? I mean, like the next time the horse is entered do these equipment changes stay in affect ? Would they have to be announced to the public again ?

I would guess 80% of equipment changes are not reported. Just the very visible ones.  Shoes off , add or take off trotting hopples, head poles ..
Not reported, hopple length, ( have you ever noted a change in length of trotting hopples ?) , bits, and such.

Depends.  What were the changes? Could be "add headpole/murphy/gaiting" because the horse was sore and running in/out and ended up scratched after warming up. In which case, take notes. His card would list latest equipment as of last start--whether startd or not. It may or may not be announced.

Hardly anyone checks shoes anymore. And most don't report changes. I only report changes if its obvious on equipment check-- and our track MAYBE measures hobbles once a month. And sometimes things get changed after warming up after equipment has already been checked. I've added/removed, hoods, pops, poles, pulled shoes, hobbles in/out all without mentioning it.

Betting tip for everyone involving broken equipment. I read a long time ago to bet horses when you see (BE) last time out. I must agree after years of betting it seems to works a lot of the time.

Is the equipment broken intentionally or just a bad outing due to it being broken ?

Supposedly the logic behind this is the equipment is  somehow  limiting the horses performance. Eventually the equipment breaks which gives the horse the ability to race faster when adjusted properly. I would guess at least 75% of the time the horses performance improves based on my observation.

Broken equipment = lots of stuff.  Lose a shoe = BE.  It is also misused as horse (usually a trotter) makes a break, catches a shoe andvthe call for a EB sonthry don’t have to Q

I’m curious how the charter finds about a ‘BE’ when it happens during a race?  My mare threw a shoe a 1/16 from the start. She won the race and I found out in the winner’s circle that this happened and no notation on the chart/program.

examples
The driver or trainer may call the paddock judge.
The starter or patrol judge may tell the driver to call the paddock judge.
The paddock judge will then call the presiding judge.
Then the presiding judges notifies the charter.
It may also start with the presiding judge calling down to find out what happened.
If it is a broken hobble, knee boot, head pole etc. you may have to show the equipment. If it is deemed faulty, you may be subject to a fine.

I am just an old horse trainer still going around in circles. Sometimes Fast. Sometimes Half-Fast.

Biggest ticket I ever cashed off an equipement change was air in all of the tires. The horse I bet ran well with a flat tire.  ;D

Last week, my horse at the Meadows had a flat tire, caused by another horse stepping on the tire.  They dq’d the other horse from 4th to 3rd, moving us up to 3rd.
The chart just said BE.
