I remember an old favourite, a big stallion named Back Door Man.  Didn’t have great gate speed but loved to come from behind.

Yes, I remember him well.  Once race he won by a full length and another he won by a head.

I remember him well. I had a $150 plus exacta for $20 at Yonkers with him finishing second at a big price. I once asked Syl King what was wrong with him and he said that he broke something in his back as a young horse but he made it to the races anyhow.

I may be wrong, but I'm thinking the horses name you both are referring to is Ironstone Taratowne.

Favorite? Well, I guess depending on the context, I've had several favorite horses. SBSW is the most talented horse I've seen come along in a long time, so I'd put him on my favorite list. Way back when Brett Pelling had an open mare at the Meadowlands who for whatever reason I just really enjoyed watching race, week in and week out. Her name was White Ruffles. She was just a tough mare. She had some issues, wasn't always 100% sound, etc., and after a tough campaign or two they became more prevalent. However, when she turned to the gate, whether it was heart, determination, or she just knew it was time to race, this mare just turned it on and showed up.

I also got a bit of a kick out of Ramblin Storm, because I remember him as a baby, when Arlene Traub had him. After that he went on to have an amazing career, went through several owners, and still late in his career (at 7, 8, and 9) he was still a top performer at the Meadowlands (Open, Winners over, 100 claimer, etc.). He was claimed twice in his career for $100,000, once very late in his career (as a 9yo!?!?!). He raced until he was 12. There was another horse who was simply a tough, hard-knocking horse, week in and week out, who just showed up and kept going, and was trained by Marsha Gardner. His name was Instrument Landing. Going way back, when I first started, in NY there was a claimer who spotted. I think he was the first horse I ever tried to buy, LOL. He was probably a 20 claimer at best and I felt like I was trying to buy Cardigan Bay, LOL. His name was Chipper Tramper. I just liked him. Even when he was toward the back of the field, in his own way, he just tried, always pacing and moving forward, trying, etc. Just an honest, cheap racehorse, but I always liked him.

My favorite horse was a filly named "Silk Stockings". Owned and trained by Preston Burris Jr., she set the track record of 157.3 at Monticello Raceway in 1975. It was the Monticello-OTB Classic #1. I think it was, at that time the richest stakes race in the US at that time. The track was packed. A great memory for me.

Actually, Silk Stockings was owned by Ken & Clair Mazik of Delaware who had a school for autistic children. The horse was so great it won in spite of Preston Burris who wasn't a good driver.

I think that you are correct. I was confused because of the description of the way he kept his head down to the ground and both were from the same connections.

I used to get a real kick out of Wiggle It Jiggleit.....with his gait and all, just kept going. Watch him parked and going in the LBJ. Amazing.
