The worst part of his gambling was when he was manager of the Reds and made out the lineup. If he wanted to bet against the Reds, he could put a bad lineup out there or rest some of the regulars.

JOHN FRANK ARMY would like to make some comments here.
(1) PETE ROSE belongs in HALL OF FAME. One of the GREATEST players to ever have played the game. I'm a little biased because he from my generation and watched him play his entire career.
(2) A side story. Met MOOSE SKROWEN (speeled it wrong) up at trackside at ARLINGTON and sat with him about 6 times. Never went to his bar in STICKNEY. Wish I had. Anyhow, conversin those 6 times with him,I was overtakin with his conversations non-stop about baseball. He had great stories about playin against PETE. But better yet, were his tales playin with BILLY MARTEN,WHITEY FORD,and MICKEY MANTLE. And a occasional tale about YOGI BERRA. Those were some great teams. But he was speakin more to both onfield and off field antics. Amazed at times how they won with the first 3 off field habits. But GREENIES were most popular back in that day. Come to game hung over or drunk and pop a 3 or 4 of them and you good as new. Don't know if PETE drank, but he was a pill popper.
(3) So I spent some time at WRIGLY in 67 and 2 months before I got drafted in 68. Always used my vacation time, sick days accrued, personal days to hit left field bleachers. Always went in when they opened gates. Loved the REDS/CUB games. Everyone hated PETE. And he hated CHICAGO fans, especially left field BLEACHER BUMS. So he always in LEFT FIELD shaggin fly balls and tradin insults with the BUMS. So one BUM brought a pair of wooden cruthches and flings them at ROSE and just misses him. PETE swearin. The BUMS are goin: You need them you FUCKIN OLD MAN. Pete pics them up and whirly birds them back into seats. The first one hits no one. The second hits this old granny who attends every game smack in the skull. knocks the poor old women out. She eventually filed a lawsuit against him. I went in ARMY so did not know outcome. I think if you get skulled by home run,you got no case. Not sure about flyin crutches. Me thinks she should have just got him to autograph the thin. She might have made some cash off of it. Quite a episode.
(4) Everytime ROSE would come to bat,the whole stadium would chant: ROSIE,ROSIE,non stop while he was at the plate. It was great.

Good guy, bad guy, doesn't matter. I am not a fanatical baseball fan, but I was always a fan of Pete Rose, his determination, drive, work ethic, intensity, and so on. Like I said, good guy, bad guy, doesn't matter. I'm sad.

Nope. Not true. He never bet against the reds (or the Phillies for that matter).
And he should 100% most definitely be in the Hall of Fame.

How would you know whether he bet against the Reds when he was managing them, even if he says he didn't I don't believe him.

Fine don't believe him. Do you honestly think there would be ANY chance of him ever getting in if he did in fact be AGAINST his own team. Nope. No evidence he did. AT ALL.

Obvious.

How many horsemen who are in the Hall of Fame at Goshen were Gamblers??
IMHO if the same standards applied to Pete Rose were used then I’m thinking there wouldn’t be many in the Harness Hall of Fame.
I believe Pete didn’t get in because he argued with the wrong people and pissed them off so the holes kept him out. PETE was a better player than many who are in there so it’s a travesty that personal opinions rather than his god given baseball talents were ignored.

There was never any proof that he bet on the Reds. MLB commish Bart Giamatti banned him from the HOF without a drop of 'Due Process" in 1989. Rose admitted he gambled on almost everything. But not the Reds. Whether Rose admitted it or not, it was up to MLB to show their hand. I've always considered Pete Rose the embodiment of what a baseball player should be. Hard nosed, fierce competitor, with a love for the game like no other. . He is hands down deserving of the HOF.

The hall of fame in CANTON is a place to honor the game and introduce your children to the greats who played by the rules and tell stories about the memories they brought you and OJ and others like him and yes PETE ROSE never killed anyone and OJ never bet on football so should PETE ROSE and OJ and even WALTER CASE be in halls of fame and to me its no but Walter case HAS CLEANED UP HIS LIFE and the others did not,,,,,,,,

Rose violated the rule about NO gambling which is posted in every dugout, and he was arrogant in his denials instead of admitting it.
