This is a current picture of Intrepid Seelster, a million dollar earner and sire.  Yes the harness industry should be very proud of itself.

Just sickening. I know he was up in Maine standing stud.

Absolutely f’ing embarrassing. Anyone associated with that horse at any point in his career should be beyond ashamed. At that age, I hope he bounces back.

This is without question sickening and disgusting. It is embarrassing that this still happens----not just to a horse like this, but any horse. The unfortunate irony is that anywhere along the line, anyone could have called Cathy Van Bussel (the wife of Chris Van Bussell, who is a legend in our sport and industry), Hubertina Van Boxmeer, or Ann Straatman, the current owners of Seelster Farms (3rd generation!) and they would have paid the money, covered the expenses, and rescued this horse. I know this horse very, very well because I tried to buy him as a 2yo. I always liked this horse, a lot, and I followed him for his entire career. Bob McIntosh had him as a 2yo, and by the end of his freshman campaign he had a lot of starts, around 18 or so! He ended up winning about $400,000 as a 2yo. He came back at 3 and earned another $300 and change, mostly in Canada. He won the OSS Super Final and the Canadian Breeders Final.....and came back at 4 and earned another $300 and change. He won a Haughton elimination, the  Molson Export, and an elimination of the Breeders Crown.

I remember reading that Intrepid Seelster was supposed to be sent to the UK about 15 years ago for stallion duty. I have no idea if he ever made it there. This is horrible. I have reached out for the person who rescued him. Our sport and industry needs to do a better job here.

Per his papers, he was never exported. So something must've gone awry there.

It's horrific to put any horse in that condition, much less one who made everyone who ever had him money from what I can tell.

I saw this earlier today.

Whoever owned him last needs to be exposed and be put on absolute blast for this.

Completely unacceptable

Mike is right and this adds more credibility to what he has been saying about the treatment of retired horses by the industry.

I went back and checked. It was 2009. He was going to Camden Stud in the UK. So, he never made it. Horrible what happened here.

Yeah I read that and thought it was garbage, too. The horse stood stud for years (2002-2020). And it's not like he was some hillbilly horse not worth keeping a stud, at least initially - he had made a million plus in stakes company. Him being a stallion didn't put him in this position nor render someone unable to feed the animal. But that's certainly one way to put your head in the sand about it, I guess.
