Vernon Downs Opening Night
« on: April 27, 2024, 11:27:08 PM »
Well after 14 races a total of $152,200 was bet for the night. That’s only $10,870 per race which included Superfecta pools under $1,000. Having never owned a racetrack does anyone know if this is a losing proposition or can a track make any money with these betting amounts?

The difference is how much slot revenue generates.  See Buffalo Raceway's handle tonight Saturday 4-27-24!

See race 9--25.4 53.4 to the 1/2 mile for n/w 3500/L5

Will the horses that cut this 1/2 be racing next week?

It’s a losing proposition. But, per the owner’s words; it doesn’t matter. His other NY track handles even less on a per race day/night. And you know what? Again, it doesn’t matter.
Reread It

They lose money on horse racing--but they must race to keep the slots going

same for Tioga

if they cared about racing-they wouldn't race when everyone else does, but Gural's theory is to create more foot traffic for the gaming side of the business-so they race on weekends

handle means nothing-they could increase handle if they raced on Tuesday and Wednesday nights--but his "foot traffic" would decline

Vernon is a nice family friendly racetrack, good food decent crowd and competitive racing. The horse that went that big mile looked like he could have gone around again very good conditioning job by his connections.

for nearly all tracks -- the business model for a harness track is to operate purely for the subsidies given to horsemen to get what owners really want.... Casino's or in Jersey's case, a slice of the pie from casino's in AC...

Then how come the sport can get old/new owners in the sport with the higher “slot infused” purses??
How many individuals here got into harness racing before ‘slot infused purses’?
FYI, I got involved in 2004 at Pompano Park [RIP] before slots occurred there.

I’m guessing you meant “can’t “ get old/new owners involved. Biggest issue is lack of policing the industry. That means getting someone to get rid of the junk.  Guys with major positives need to be removed completely. Also the guys that regularly steal money from owners with the way the invoice. Owning horses or any other animal for sport is risky enough without people feeling like they got cheated.

Food for thought—would Vernon be ‘paradise’ if given the buffalo raceway purse structure??

Yes. It is a mile track with a good surface. Much better than a 1/2 with a crap surface if you trying to keep one sound enough to race every week
