What happened to foreign pipeline of top tier horses ?
« on: February 24, 2024, 03:37:15 PM »
Monster horses used to often get here from overseas and dominate right away. I heard they improved due to being fresh/lightly raced and reacting to our superior drugs.

It's all BS. The foreign horses ebb and flow. Go back to the days when Jerry Silverman brought them in. The boys from "Down Under" knew more about those horses than anyone in the country -- going all the way back to Brian Pelling. Then John Curtain. Then Ross Croghan. And so on and so on. How many Cardiga Bay's have come over in the last 40 years? Other than Shartin who was a "black swan" so to speak -- every great, the next "greatest horse to come from down under" has done nothing near what the promoters said.

The majority of the down under horses come here, hit a streak, and then they fold like a Hanes t-shirt.

If they bled there they have to come here.  Many win their first couple starts especially if they get lasix and have some back class.  Then most get sick from the climate change or whatever.  The better ones who acclimate make a lot of money like a Leonidas or Let it Ride.

The current down under star Leap to Fame has an older half brother that races over here Maximus Red.

As for the better ones down there Emma Stewart and her partner train most of the best ones and their owners will not sell to North American interests so very little has been coming in the last couple years.  Horses that are good (not great) from overseas today seem to be coming from Great Britain and Ireland.  Oakwood Arden is a good example.  Probably not a true open horse but six in a row and hardly challenged is a good start.
