Stable did very well at Plainridge in the Mass Stakes races this week and last week. Runs a top-notch operation stabling at Vernon. Kudos to him and his staff. One of the “good guys” in the business.

Agreed. i remember him from long ago, I remember someone telling me he did not feed his horses grain. Just hay. This was along time ago when he was in the Pa. area. please don't kill me, but I was told this. I know it seems impossible. Any truth to that? Did he have a brother in the industry? John or something like that.

Regarding tracks like Vernon Downs..do owners and trainers earn anything racing for the small amounts they call purses? With everything so expensive how do you come close to breaking even when most of the purses are for $4K-$5K?

You don't. You fix races, live lean and die broke.

If the Massachusetts Sires Stakes is paying for the program at Vernon, he is doing ok. Probably being better off at Vernon and the surface is better and the surroundings much more peaceful.

Just looked up john Ducharme cause i used to do catch paddocks for him as a kid when he shipped into NY. Can't believe he was 90 in 2017 and still training.  Is George a son/brother? Prolly son. Anyone know if John is alive still?

A little history lesson: Vernon was and still one of the best tracks to train trotters. Back in the 60’s, 70’s, etc, etc, all of the big stables, e.g., Dancer, O’Brien, Haughton, Insko, Glen Garnsey, etc, etc, would send a string there every summer for that reason.

I know, I was there.

As an owner you have a good day job that subsidizes your racing operations.

Wow  Not exactly a common name and both in racing. Hmmm. I assumed they were related.  John was a nice man to me when he would come into YR. I was a go to paddock guy for him,   Ty for the info

Top notch with trotters; has the patience and knows how to rig them.  Not so much for pacers.
