Pass the envelope please
« on: September 20, 2023, 09:07:12 PM »
Was thinking about the differences in racing between the US and Canada and it dawned on me that in my 50 years in the game, there seems to be far more serious race fixing scandals over that time here than in Canada. Why do you think this is? There was undoubtedly a rather serious infiltration into harness racing by organized crime in the 60s through the late 90s especially at the major tracks located near the major cities. Handles were sky high in the glory days and now they are awful, so the mob has moved onto greener pastures no doubt. No rocket science here admittedly. What other factors do you think contribute to the fact that there are far more serious, wide ranging and in some cases career ending race fixing conspiracies and scandals here in the US? the answers should be fun!

Simple arithmetic. As you stated the handle can’t support the play to make it profitable for collusion. Also the top tier drivers earn too much to even consider it.

I also believe because the drivers at the top and near top level move around so much, there is much less "racetrack colony/fraternity" at each track.

Strange you mention that.
With the substantial purses supported by the casino, I would expect to see B track drivers taking a shot at big money.
Yet there's no trespassing at YR.
No young blood since JoeyB, Buter, and Boyd.
I presume theres not a welcoming vibe there.

The toll at the GW Bridge is $15 and the traffic can be just awful. I would head to Yonkers either.

Are you referring to race fixing present day or 20th century?
