Sunday fun - RR trivia style
« on: September 10, 2023, 11:33:34 AM »
Who won the very first $50,000 overnight race in the history of harness racing? It was back in the very late 40s!  At Roosevelt. The man was the O/T/D so he definitely "GOT IT ALL" 25k was like 3 years pay in those days for the average man then. I know this from seeing an original program cover from the following days races hanging in the old Kelly's Tack Shop at RR. So I know exactly who it is, just unsure of the exact date.  Have fun old timers....

I am clueless as to who won that race but I can tell you that a mare named Martha Lee won the first race ever and another mare Miss June won won the fifth race on opening night, then collapsed and died on the track.

Here's another question from those old days.   Who performed at their famous Rock Concert in 1974 and how many people showed up?  They had an earlier one in 72 but it didn't do as well.

Stills was a lesser known than a lot of the others on that card in 72.  CSNY had Joni Mitchell and the Beachboys with them in 74.  You didn't answer how many people were there but I'm sure you looked it up so I'll just say it.  75,000 ... beat any harness venue ever.

In 72 it was a multi day affair and attendance was estimated at between 15 and 20,000 which was way under expectations.  The other stars that year were Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, Sly and the Family Stone, Shirelles, Bo Diddly, Stills,  Commander Cody, Sha Na Na and Jefferson Airplane (what were they doing in that mix)?

Must have been too many black groups to ramp up attendance back then on Long Island.

  • Bitter Truth: That Golden Tempo , I'm afraid is  a money burner. Gets so far back. Was in range but just hung and raced even in the stretch. Didn't see a Derby winner in there in my opinion.
