It is hard to find a worse betting venue than Tioga Downs. The betting handles are so bad a medium size better can easily blow up a pool. So today they held some Empire State stakes races. In the feature they put $117,750 up for grabs. What did the betting public think of this? The total handle for the race was less than $17,000. The first race had a $20,000 purse and the fans pushed through a grand total of $8,500 which included a Superfecta pool of $840 before the takeout. Why in the world would a half way serious bettor bet Tioga or others like this place?

It's too bad because it is such a fabulous facility that is absolutely in the middle of nowhere. The hotel is sold out months in advance for every weekend of the summer, but there is almost zero interest in the harness racing side of the operation. Slot machines and sports betting paying for the mega losses of buggy racing.

no handle help comes from Toronto area teletheaters which RARELY to NEVER put Tioga on tvs.

I’m don’t know the ins and outs of the simulcast business. But I was told by Mr. Gural (paraphrasing) ‘it really doesn’t matter’ in regards to handle at Tioga. That said, pre-Meadowlands (Gural era) the handle was much better (albeit not good) than today.
