Incredibly Freehold Raceway reopened under the tents in less than 3 months. As painful as the fire was it turned out ok. They built a much nicer facility for the patrons. Unfortunately the quality of racing there nowadays is pretty bad.

Before The Meadowlands opened, the Saturday programs were quite good at Freehold Raceway. A lot of top horsemen raced there and brought some excellent horses. I even recall Cardigan Bay with Stanley Dancer in the bike. Eddie Cobb, Carmine and of course Herve to name a few. Then we had regulars such as Harold Kelly, Jackie Mo, Marvin Maker, Billy Bresnahan, Cat Manzi and so on. I saw a lot of solid racing there. Whether some of it was choreographed who knows for sure but it was entertaining.

Still at YR and RR and The BIG M, we all called bottom feeder, bush league losers "FREEHOLDS"!  There's a reason.

If you think the top 3 tracks in America in that era were Meadowlands, Balmoral and Freehold you are in another world. many of your posts are with out merit and this is another one.

Respectfully I have to agree with Fugazzi. Nothing was bigger than The Big M. Balmoral wasn’t on my radar in those days. Freehold got substantial attendance especially on Saturdays. I would add that Pompano Park played an important role during the winter months. There were also large crowds on Saturday nights. The dining room was packed in those days. The biggest and best trainers had many horses stabled at the track. Depending on the specific years we are writing about I would add Liberty Bell and Brandywine raceways.

Appreciate the support.  Maywood, Yonkers obviously were always vastly superior to Freehold. Horses went from YR to Freehold not the other way around, Totally agree about Brandywine, a great race track sorely missed and Liberty Bell and Pompano, especially winter.  Freestate, Dover, Sportsman's, Garden state was fantastic during it;s brief life. Rosecroft had the Messenger back in the day, right?
