Isn it really 40 years ago...
« on: August 17, 2023, 11:06:47 PM »
That the legendary trotter, Ideal du Gazeau wins his 3rd consecutive RR International Trot by sitting the entire mile and a quarter on the outside of his country mate and wears him down in the stretch to win decisively. Gosh, i can still remember where i was standing watching it in disbelief. Great grilled pretzel on the way out too. Nathans for a hot dog! A great night.

he had such a powerful stride.
I recall in one of the inernational trots-not necessarily the International, one of the drivers went three wide and drove hard to the finish line at the 1 mile mark-too bad the race was a mile and a half!

That's right    remember his duels in the previous races with Jorky? They would skip, get back on and keep dueling.  Amazing

In some of those races was a trotter named Crown Wood, who would go on to race as a pacer for Larry Summer  He was really good and could take a lot of air

There were many Bobo fans. Me included. Jack defiantly kicked it up with his race call.  Ideal du Gazeau, there was not another one like him. He looked like he was lame or was going to break with every stride. He would just gobble up ground and get faster and faster.

I remember this. The driver almost started to turn around and as everyone was blowing past him he realized the race wasn’t over. I thought that guy was going to cause an accident.

I grew up in northern NJ. I was hooked on harness racing as a teenager. What I remember is the NYC radio station, WINZ, used to broadcast the results of each race from either Yonkers or RR as they became available. If I had a few bucks and gave like $2-$4 to a friend going to the track, I would be glued to my transistor radio waiting to hear if I won. Remember no cell phones and no pay phones were available during the race program. The phone booths were actually locked so there couldn’t be any bookmaking. Wow have things changed.

Good memory  Yes  They would lock the phones at YRm both down in the track kitchen card playing room and in the grandstand. Remember CBS News radio 880  would gice results after each race and sometimes replay the stretch call.  Same here  me glued to the radio with my marked up Sports Eye
