Trainers who know Erv have always said he seems to find that next big spender. If history continues however those big spenders either move on or change their focus on the game. Some owners leave and go back. Some stay and play in the IL small pond giving up on the years of chasing and paying the worthless staking fees. The years of history and the A-list of high-profile earning owners with good paying careers have moved on. It is fact and nothing to argue because it is probably true to all trainers because the ROI in harness racing is 11-14%. At least that return is better than the thoroughbred side. Not knocking Erv I like him but that is the basics of buying the unknown. Owners whether they invest and continue to lose or if they invest further to avoid capital gains. The golden rule is if you have two consecutive years of big failure you will tap out owners going into that third year. You have the incoming yearlings with 10 months of bills only you better have some stake horses that actually win or a couple of overnight free for all studs. Or the game spits you up and chews you out.
