its called investing in your business
all business do it, capital cost expenditure, can be spread over a number of years
 i have never been so i don't know if it is necessary or not to improve the fan experience and the overall business of the facility
if it is good for them
you spread the cost over the # of race dates per year x the number of years the facility will be in use and perhaps $20 m is not a lot

Why build a grandstand if you're gonna put the product out of business.  Honestly, why don't the horsemen deserve some $$$$ ?  They deliver the product, often leaving w/ 0.  This is a very mean, short-sighted perspective

i think the horseman ( drivers and trainers ) have done just fine
keep in mind that because they get 5% they have a built in income increase as purses have gone up, granted not as much since covid but many regional sires stakes are back to increasing
lets just look at a few regular  drivers, leaving the top level grand circuit out of this example
ronnie wrenn , trace tetrick etc all having purse earnings so far in 2021 of $5m or more
that is $250 k on that 5% alone year to date, lets assume they make $300 k for the year, not bad
and yet owners continue to absorb higher costs and going higher, wait until next year, gas for shipping, feed, labor, stakes payments and   supplements etc etc
not to mention the capital cost of buying the horses in the first place
not every owner is a multi millionaire from an outside business
yes higher purses help but when you get at least 10% taken off the top it is tough
maybe the 5% rule that has been around forever is outdated, maybe 3% makes more sense so owners  get more back, maybe their should be a maximum fixed amount in major races.. drivers were getting $15k for some of the breeders crown wins
something needs to change or in a few years owners will be in short supply
