Can someone tell me the history of this guy? I know he’s been coming to Pompano for the last for five years but recently he’s been doing very well the last couple weeks on the training  and driving side. I’m familiar with his son from watching racing in California and Minnesota but I’ve heard some people say that Rick is an excellent horseman who is very well respected and can really get one to go. Thoughts?

Been around forever, drove at vernon in the 90's before going to hoosier and cal expo...not a bad driver for AA racetracks when he wants to be, but may have fixed a few over the years.

Know Rick well. Started at Green Mountain in the early 70’s. Then went home to VD and dominated. His brother also a D/T passed away long time ago. Luke is his son. Rick dominated CA racing both driving and training for a long time. He is an excellent all around horseman. Does he cheat? Who doesn’t? He’s about 66 now and slowing down. I believe he has 8000 driving wins and several thousand training wins.

Got it! I’ve always watched him at Pompano the last few years but he seems to be doing better early in the meet and a couple people told me he’s an excellent horseman one of the best around

I was watching Pompano Park the other day and after Rick won a race with Mc Mach, the announcer stated that he now had 6,926 driving wins and I believe he said around 3,600 training wins.

Like some other trainer/drivers, I find Ricks success is streaky. When his stable is firing ignore his horses  at a risk if your wagering. I certainly give him respect from a handicapping view; Luke though not so  much.

Wasn't aware he got his start at Green Mountain. I knew he was at Cal Expo with Luke  (20 or 25 yrs ago?) and assumed he got his start  out there.

Spent there in my youth betting greyhounds and otherwise carousing. Missed out on when the track had thoroughbreds and standardbreds.

I remember Plano at Pocono and Dover/Harrington in the 70's. He was good friends with John Cerabino and always used Bino's latest hot sulky. He always had a huge cross around his neck like he was expecting vampires.

And don't forget the artificial turf he's got laying on top of his head!  73cv.2  73cv.2  73cv.2     Way back when, we were in the drivers room and that rug got sideways and he had to adjust it.  Couldn't believe it was the same guy.   11.wp  11.wp
