HOW OLD IS TOO OLD TO BUY A USED HORSE?
« on: June 20, 2018, 10:51:40 AM »
Anecdotally, it seems that few horses keep their form/class at age 8 or up.

So, either assuming the assumption correct or adjusting age, once you calculate ex-age, ex-residual value value par (however you choose to do so), what discount to par do you demand per year?

10%?
25%?

Alternatively, is there an age where, irregardless of to-date success, you just say no and move on?

Depends on work/enviroment anticipated moving forward.. Many horses in various events are best at 12-14yrs old.

Let's exclude Milk Wagons and Miniature Horse Pageants.

Can we include cross country events?

No.  Also no Ponderosa/Hoss applications.

I've been approached by a couple major owners to work as a rcing manager and I'm just kicking the idea around.

With the purses as high as they are you can claim one, and if you do well, you can get your money back in a couple of months. I think 8-10 years old is about as high as I would go.

I claimed Coerfurst at 9 and he made over $100,000 3 years in a row. Claimed Elvis T at 7 had him till he was 11 and he made over $200,000. I bought Rival Guy A. at 9 and he won almost 40 races in 3+ years.
