Buffalo Cancels Again
« on: April 10, 2018, 07:47:51 PM »
This Friday was supposed to be the first Friday night card in a long time. Just 55 horses in to go. They had to cancel. Heard its become very toxic there. Some of their long time trainers have left for other tracks (Jim Graham to Saratoga). What a mess! What happens to all that slot money? Should just move the whole meet to Batavia.

Seems to me the whole state with the exception of YR is in trouble. Purses have steadily gone down and continue while costs to owners continually go up. Enough is enough.

It has become toxic, but the purses have increased. Speaking of Graham , hes recovering from a terrible training accident at the spa, get well soon jimmy

Looks as the horse shortage is most evident on the bottom end. If it was not for all the New Zealand and Australian imports, Yonkers racing would be quite different.

Disagree Yonkers never had shortage before the foreign import started.  The reason Yonkers has horses and buffalo doesn’t is simple look at the purses.  Why race for peanuts if you’d can go for 2 to 3x more purses at yonkers

The whole industry has a shortage . The low end tracks are affected most as you are not going to import cheap horses.
Yonkers may not have a horse shortage by the number of horses in the entry box, for just the reason you say but, the import of high end horses are often 3, 4 and 5 in the field of 8.

I always said getting rid of the cheap claimers would bite the business in the ass and it has. The $2500-4000 claimers were needed to fill the cards especially at the smaller tracks like Buffalo. The gamblers didn`t care if it was the open or a quarter claimer and most favored the claimers to bet on. It got rid of a lot of the small guys who were content on just having a couple cheap horses because he loved it.
