Of course, it serves the NFL right for cynically exploiting veterans and propagandizing patriotism for years for their own material gain and viewership.  In the interim it has warped into some twisted tribal, nationalistic offshoot that the country now gets to bear the burden of, suffering its consequence. So what exactly are you lamenting again, and why? Let the NFL deal with what they helped to create.
