BREAKING: UNBELIEVABLE! Trump signs order granting PERMANENT PROTECTION for his Oval Office makeover after DESTROYING the historic East Wing.
You couldn’t make this up if you tried. And if you did, no one would believe you!
Donald Trump just promised to protect the White House from exactly the kind of destruction that he himself inflicted on the demolished East Wing of that historic building.
In remarks at the remaining sections of the White House, Trump announced that he will sign a document turning the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room into a NATIONAL MONUMENT. “It won’t be able to be taken down, destroyed, touched, or anything else,” he said. Once it’s “legally binding,” he said, it would be “impossible for anybody ever to destroy this incredible space.”
The irony is so thick you would need to cut it with a sledgehammer.
This is the same man who took a wrecking ball to the East Wing of the People’s House to make way for his gold-plated vanity ballroom. Congress never voted on it. The American people got no say. One president decided a piece of the nation’s most famous home was his to flatten, and it was flattened.
Now he’s concerned about preserving the tacky gold ornamentation that he tastelessly plastered on the walls of the Oval Office.
“We like the Oval Office, and it’s a symbol like the White House itself,” Trump said. “It’s a symbol of our country and the greatness of our country.”
The White House as a whole was also a symbol of the country, right up until he tore part of it down.
Then came the line that gave it all away: “If anyone ever decides to come and start knocking down walls, you’ll call me, wherever I may be, and I will come back here, and I will make sure it never happens, okay?”
It’s such a gob-smacking statement that we had to read it twice. The only person who has knocked down White House walls in modern memory is promising to rush back from wherever he is and stop people from knocking down White House walls. Trump isn’t the guard dog in this story. He’s the burglar who’s now offering to install the alarm.
The rest of the speech wandered the way his speeches do lately. “We won World War II. We won World War I. We won a lot of things,” he said, out of nowhere. He mentioned the “good years during my, so far, six years,” which won’t reassure anyone worried about how long he plans to stay. He said the national monument designation “in theory” should “end that problem,” though it isn’t clear what problem he meant.
Then he praised his own performance. “That’s a good one, you know, that’s good,” he said. “Very artistic.”
There’s a reason the most famous room in America needs protection, and it isn’t a future president. It’s the current one, who treats the White House like a Trump property he’s renovating to his taste. He hasn’t answered for the East Wing. He’s just putting a “Do Not Touch” sign on the rooms he chose not to demolish.
A new Democratic Congress takes over in January. Its members should ask who approved the demolition and who paid for it. The leaked donor list shows $333 million in secret money behind the ballroom.
Trump may want to be remembered for protecting the White House, but he’ll always be remembered for the wrecking crew and the desecration of not only the East Wing, but also Jackie Kennedy’s historic Rose Garden. Trying to permanently enshrine his incredibly bad taste in design not only shows his massive hubris, but twists the knife in the backs of the American people whom he betrayed with his hypocritical destruction of what is and always will be the “People’s House.”
