Maine Monopoly
« on: April 17, 2023, 09:56:16 AM »
Ever wonder how some stables seem to dominate in Maine earning most of the wins and purse money? I guess something could be said about this happening in many states. It is something I truly don’t have an answer for but needs to be examined. Is it due to these larger stables simply having better horses or is there more to it? Are they better trainers? Are they better drivers?

I watch racing from other states and see that some of them have invested in the industry such as Kentucky and Minnesota. I see big casinos with horse barns on site. I also see more claiming races. Whatever the case, Maine has it wrong….really wrong. I suspect if we had legislation and similar situations as these other states our future of the sport would be brighter. Oh how I want to own horses in Maine but nothing…literally nothing can make me come back until options are better. The days are short in Maine, the travel for most is long to race, and the overall odds of a positive investment are low. Maine horseman deserve better.

I remember how fun it was to own and train horses on site where they raced. The two biggest counties in Maine have limited training track and barn options. The rumors of a new track in Southern Maine are ten years old now. Must be a pipe dream……

I do hope Florida has harness racing again. I don’t see how it won’t be revived there given its weather and long history. I honestly believe it will happen.

It would make sense ie the climate, and with the amount of wealth down here especially in South Florida and them coming mainly from up north where they must of been HR fans at one time or another - they couldn't make it work, not even close, it was welfare subsidized racing in its entirety at the end.

As a kid in the 80's, and 90's those Maine horses, Scarborough, Lebanon, etc would ship to Yonkers, pick up Wally Case their hometown son and he'd take 7,8,9,10 seconds off them, 2:07 horses winning in 157, simply amazing!  The memories.   tmbz1

old school hits on something that i agree.  it was a lot of fun back when tracks had stables. you trained raced and beded them right at the track. no consaint trailer rides. it also kept a few more people in the business. so right about very limited stable and training in southern maine. while i understand tracks look at stables as a big expense they do fill cards, plus most were stable here race here. from the wagering side back then most races had 8 horses. we raced way more. made a good life back then.  on any ideas of the new track i think my great grand kids will never see it yet alone me. wish it were to happen.

CAN THE PEOPLE OR SPOKESPERSON BEHIND THE BUILDERS OF THE PROPOSED NEW TRACK GIVE SOME UPDATES? IS IT A DEAD ISSUE?? TO SAY NOTHING GIVES THE IMPRESSION THAT THIS HAS BEEN A BIG RUMOR.

Preliminary site work has been hampered by the workers’ need to dodge flying pigs.

Lebanon is in Ohio, I'm pretty sure. 7,8,9,10 seconds off a horse, WOW! Is that possible?  I think you're funning us.

Ya right, thanks for the correction, so many fair tracks in Maine (and other places) made the trip to Yonkers, that one eluded me.  Ask anyone who grew up in NY, absolutely, they must of been running some on dinosaur dung dirt at the fair tracks to move to a proper track and gain that kind of improvement, plus Walter Case Jr., could take anything and make it not just run, but love to run.

He did kick horses at times, terrible but being the best and competitive, heavy is the crown!   ;D

Lots of Downeasters named Eaton, but this one is from away.  He was in jail in Kansas, then Florida, and Maine.  He did three years for assault, just got out 4 days ago.  Obviously, he was not rehabilitated.
