OMG, NO MEANS NO! Trump reveals he personally called Google's CEO about renaming the Atlantic Ocean to TRUMP OCEAN and got a SPECTACULARLY appropriate rejection!
It looks like Google has finally grown some cojones.
Up until now, the tech giant has blissfully complied with Donald Trump’s lunatic renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario in its Google Maps applications.
But now, Trump has told supporters at a South Carolina rally Wednesday that he called Google CEO Sundar Pichai and asked whether the company could handle renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean the “Trump Ocean.”
Trump recounted the conversation, laughing: “I said, Sundar, I’m thinking of the Atlantic Ocean, can you handle it?” Pichai, by Trump’s telling, replied: “No, no, no, this time I’m not doing it. Oceans are different, sir, they cover really a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.”
So, Trump will “probably pass.” He asked the crowd, “Should I pass? I think let’s keep it the Atlantic Ocean, right?” Google hasn’t confirmed the conversation took place.
The egomaniacal Trump’s obsession with arbitrarily changing the long-established names of major geographical features isn’t just a one-off thing. Earlier this month in Tennessee, Trump said he wanted to add a river and an ocean to the list of places he’d rename before leaving office, floating “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas.”
He’s also floated a “Trump Strait” for the Strait of Hormuz. In January 2025, he signed an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” and in August 2026 he did the same to Lake Ontario, calling it “Lake America.” Google updated its maps for U.S. users in both cases, while Canadians still see Lake Ontario. The company says its policy follows official government sources.
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which standardizes names for federal use, generally discourages changes without a compelling reason. Its standard domestic policy also prohibits naming geographic features after living people, though names set by executive order or Congress may be handled differently.
Only a man as deep into dementia as Donald Trump would focus on this kind of priority while Americans are dealing with the cost of living, an unfinished war in Iran, and a FEMA chief telling states to handle disasters on their own.
Meanwhile, the president is on the phone with the CEO of Google asking whether the Atlantic Ocean can be renamed in his honor.
Hopefully, Trump hasn’t lost so much of his grey matter that he doesn’t realize that he’s gone too far this time. The world’s oceans may be safe from his megalomania for now, but only because Google had the good sense to say no to a raging narcissist.
