       The one thing I could never figure out is how he never faced any legal charges.  From what I had heard , the whole financial deal was just a Ponzi scheme . isn’t that against the law ?

Were the alleged victims (upstanding citizens  ) of the alleged crime(s) of high moral character  did / do they earn their money that they would invest 100% legitimately    do they usually avoid law enforcement like the fucking plague  did they have a lawyer say STFU
