Saratoga vs Monticello Tracks ?
« on: March 03, 2021, 06:42:51 PM »
All kidding aside, why can Saratoga race and Monticello has to cancel?  It would seem the areas get the about the same amount of snow and rain?

Actually, Saratoga will get colder and usually more snow than Monticello. It would appear the answer to why Monticello is not racing is in the actual investment into the track surface.
The shameful thing is, in the past, Monticello would maybe cancel racing a couple days do to thawing and heaving. Today, they seem to have a level of maintenance fitting a seasonal fair track.

Snow and rain are not the issue with the track heaving. Saratoga years ago was one of the worst heaving track in the state. The spent a ton of money and time years ago on the base and it made a huge difference. The base down to 3 feet is important as the tracks are always uncovered and the frost goes deeper. Composition of sand and gravel of base is also important. Any salt added to the track will lengthen the amount of time the track heaves.
