What state to buy yearlings in this fall
« on: June 20, 2023, 03:21:10 PM »
I have finally given up on Illinois.  Any recommendations for a small time owner to buy yearlings in this fall.  I'm leaning towards Minnesota and New York.

EVERYONE IS LEAVING INDIANA AND GOING TO OHIO AND KENTUCKY. USED TO BE REALLY GOOD AT HOOSIER BUT IT ENDED LAST YEAR. OHIO IS HUGE PURSE MONEY EVEN FOR OVERNIGHT HORSES. THAT IS THE BEST PLACE RIGHT NOW. INDY LOST THE MOMENTUM. STILL NOT A BAD PLACE BUT OHIO AND KENTUCKY ARE WAY BETTER, EASIER RACING AND TRIPLE THE PURSE MONEY.

Try Massachusetts!  Only a handful to race against and they race in late September and early October!  You might be able to find NY bred and foaled in Massachusetts and you both Sires Stakes!  2 for the price of 1!

Illinois has turned into a real shit show. Anyone considering buying and Illinois Bred yearling needs their heads examined. Two year olds at Springfield are racing for $4,500. It's virtually impossible to make a profit with such a limited racing schedule for 2 and 3 year olds. Every state near Illinois has a much better stakes program. Just looking at those stake programs in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Minnesota, Michigan and even Iowa makes owning an Illinois Bred 2 and 3 year old a very difficult proposition.
