"You're probably better off finding a trainer that you like, deal with, and trust his/her judgment and get into partnership with them."

Rainman and I agree on very little, but we have found common ground on the ownership piece.
Even better if you have a couple of friends that want to do the same thing.
Find a good trainer and take a group to him that want 30% or more of a horse.   He'll take a bit and will have a couple of owners that he can add to fill up the 100%.
Get involved in the process of buying a 2 year old.   Make notes in a catalogue.   Watch the videos.  Go to the sale.
Interesting and fun.

Thaks for the compliment for a change.   tmbz1 tmbz1

There is a fractional ownership group in Ontario.called Landmark...run by the Steacy operation....they buy yearlings each year and parcel them out....they dont buy and sell older horses...i believe they look to sell them after their 3yr old season.....so wait until the Fall and investigate the operation........ ..The Steacys have been around for years with a good reputation

darnoldrocks..... rainman2 has done better than probably 90% of the suckers who lost money in "the biz". I know, because i'm one of the 90%! LOL! I've owned both thoroughbreds and harness horses. I've lost cash in both. But more in harness racing. So his advise is from experience, not just from speculation. His relationship with his trainer is solid, and because of his loyalty, he gets a "piece" of the good young stock. As always, it's still a big gamble. But rainman2's "fractional ownership" has proved that you can have fun and still make a few bucks too!
